A Guide to Progressive Rock, Scene by Scene
From Canterbury’s whimsy to Krautrock’s pulse, from the Italian RPI to the modern wave, post-rock and progressive metal: the scenes, bands and essential albums that make this music endless.

Prog Atlas maps progressive rock the way people actually listen to it: by scene, by band, album by album. I’m Marcus Stone. I write the Beyond the Sound books, and I built this site as their companion.
You can start with a whole scene and follow it down to a single record, or begin with one band you love and work your way out. Here you will find the scene guides, a guide for every band on the site, pages on the albums, and the long reads: the best albums and songs, whole discographies ranked, the great debates, the labels, the studios and the sleeves. From Genesis and King Crimson to PFM and Banco, from Can and Tangerine Dream to Marillion and Opeth, from Magma to Mogwai. When you want the whole story of a scene or a band in one place, my books tell it in full.

My progressive rock books
I write two series of books on progressive rock. Beyond the Sound tells the story scene by scene, one volume each. The Portraits stay with a single band, from the first line-up to what the music was worth afterwards. Every book has its own page here, with what is inside.
